MARIETTA, Georgia - At the heart of the new Purate® advanced design chlorine dioxide (CIO2) generator from Eka Chemicals Inc. is a customized, corrosion-resistant heat exchanger from AMETEK Chemical Products. The unique small-scale reaction unit developed by Eka Chemicals incorporates an AMETEK® shell-and-tube fluoropolymer heat exchanger to supply specific sulfuric acid solutions.
The Eka Chemicals’ system utilizes patented chemical technology to produce chlorine dioxide safely and efficiently. Chlorine dioxide is a powerful disinfectant that effectively oxidizes metals and is highly reactive with organic species, breaking down aromatic rings and high molecular weight organics without producing undesirable chlorinated organic by-products.
For years, Eka has offered large-scale CIO2 generation systems to the pulp and paper industry for bleaching wood fibers. Increasingly, chlorine dioxide is the choice for water treatment, disinfection and sterilization applications. Small-scale systems, however, have not enjoyed wide spread application because they were unable to achieve high chemical conversion efficiencies without excessive acid feed, undesirable by-products, or the use of very sizable, costly systems.
That’s changed with the introduction of Eka Chemical’s patented process technology. Eka Chemical’s advanced design CIO2 generator is environmentally friendly and elemental chlorine-free. The process utilizes a patented hydrogen peroxide-based chemistry that yields chlorine dioxide by reducing sodium chlorate in the presence of sulfuric acid.
Eka Chemical’s proprietary reaction vessel design optimizes the mixing of feed chemicals yielding efficiencies of 95 % or greater. Strong sulfuric acid is diluted to a specific concentration and then passed through the AMETEK® fluoropolymer heat exchanger before being fed into the system’s specially designed reactor along with Purate® --Eka Chemical’s proprietary hydrogen peroxide-sodium chlorate formulation. Purate® is registered with the US EPA for industrial and municipal water disinfection, approved by the US FDA for food processing applications, and certified to NSF Standards 60 & 61 for drinking water.
Fluoropolymer heat exchangers from AMETEK Chemical Products have been used in process applications for more than 30 years primarily to heat or cool highly corrosive fluids, such as ammonium hydroxide, sulfuric and hydrochloric acids. AMETEK® heat exchangers are more durable and less brittle than glass and graphite and more corrosion resistant than most metals. They offer low extractables that could add contaminants or detract from the effectiveness of the fluids being heated or cooled.
Additionally, shell-and-tube configurations are available with nonmetallic shells to eliminate any metal presence in proximity to fluid handling processes.
Eka Chemicals is a unit of Akzo Nobel’s chemical group and a leading worldwide supplier of bleaching and paper chemicals to the pulp & paper industry. Akzo Nobel, which serves customers worldwide with healthcare products, coatings and chemicals, had consolidated sales totaling EUR 13 billion in 2003.
AMETEK Chemical Products is a unit of AMETEK, Inc. a leading global manufacturer of electronic instruments and electric motors with annualized sales of more than $1.2 billion.
